Former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa has filed a lawsuit against African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo following allegations made in a televised interview.
Okonkwo had accused Udenwa and other South-East leaders of extorting aspirants seeking elective positions under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), reportedly stating that the NDC had acknowledged the issue was limited to its South-East caucus, naming Onyema Ugochukwu, Udenwa, Peter Obi and others as being involved.
In response, Udenwa’s lawyer, Soronnadi A. Njoku (SAN), demanded a retraction, a public apology, and ₦5 billion in damages.
Separately, Peter Obi has also pushed back against similar claims from Okonkwo, who alleged that Obi and some South-East political figures received roughly ₦10 million from aspirants in exchange for party tickets, along with other claims of financial irregularities. Obi’s legal team has rejected the allegations as false and defamatory, demanding ₦5 billion in damages and a public apology, with a lawsuit threatened if Okonkwo fails to retract his statements.
Speaking on NoireTV, Obi denied any unethical conduct, insisting he has always operated within established rules. He said he has never been known to act improperly and would not compromise the standards he has long advocated for, adding that anyone is free to criticize him but he won’t betray the principles he stands for. He further noted that had he wanted to engage in wrongdoing, he could have done so while still in office rather than leaving with a clean record.
