Nollywood actress Eyiyemi Afolayan has revealed why she is unwilling to build a relationship from the ground up with a financially struggling man, saying her stance is shaped by her belief that some men change after becoming successful.
The actress, who is the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, shared her views during an interview with BBC Yoruba, where she spoke about relationships, financial stability, and marriage.
According to Eyiyemi, she believes that some men become disrespectful or unfaithful once they attain wealth, making her reluctant to invest in building a man financially before marriage.
She explained that she was raised in a comfortable environment and expects any man seeking her hand in marriage to already have a stable source of income.
“I can’t build with a man. You know men; they are ingrates. If I marry a man who doesn’t have money and he later becomes wealthy, he may not stay because he truly loves me. He may only have remained because he lacked the means to live the lifestyle he wanted,” she said.
Eyiyemi added that while she is willing to support a partner who is already working hard, she would not take on the responsibility of financially providing for him.
“I was born into wealth. Any man who wants to marry me must already be doing something meaningful for himself. I can support him, but I can’t be the one feeding him,” she stated.
The fast-rising actress also addressed the issue of polygamy, making it clear that she would never agree to become a second or third wife.
According to her, her decision has nothing to do with jealousy but stems from her belief that polygamous marriages are often accompanied by unnecessary conflicts and complications.
“I can’t be a second or third wife to any man. It’s not because I’m jealous. I just believe polygamous homes come with a lot of problems,” she said.
Eyiyemi’s remarks have since sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians expressing mixed opinions about her views on relationships, financial independence, and marriage expectations.
