An F-4 Phantom military jet crashed on Saturday at a base outside Athens during an airshow, Greek news agency ANA reports.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, and the fate of the two pilots aboard the aircraft has not yet been confirmed, according to local media.
A journalist with public broadcaster ERT, who was at the scene, said the jet had just taken off when it suddenly lost altitude and went down.
An explosion followed immediately after the crash, which occurred in full view of thousands of spectators attending the annual “Athens Flying Week” event.
A fire service helicopter was deployed to the scene to put out the blaze sparked by the crash, ERT reported.
Greece’s Defence Minister, Nikos Dendias, cancelled a scheduled trip to Thessaloniki’s International Fair in order to visit the crash site.
