Brampton, Canada, was the unlikely stage for a profound display of Yoruba royalty and Christian faith. On a crisp morning, the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, and his queen, Olori Mariam Ajibola Ogunwusi, presented their royal twins to the world not with traditional drumming and libations, but with scripture and prayer.
The naming ceremony, a strictly by-invitation affair, was held at a private venue in Brampton. Inside, members of the Nigerian royal family sat alongside local Canadian well-wishers, all bearing witness to a historic fusion of cultures. The Ooni, represented by his elder sinking Sooko Laekun Prince Adegboyega Ogunwusi and Princess Folashade Fadairo-Ogunwusi sat calmly as the officiating pastor, Bishop Obafemi Lucas, founder and spiritual leader of the Gospel of Fire Ministries (GOFM), which operates the Mountain of Miracles (Ori Oke Iyanu) prayer mountain located in Ilara, Epe, Lagos State, opened his Bible and started with prayers.
“These children are not just princes of Ile-Ife,” Pastor Lucas announced. “They are children of the Most High God.”
One by one, the Bishop Lucas called out the names, each one a carefully chosen prayer. The first set of names honored the family’s royal lineage: Adelowo, Adelanire, Adejare, Adedunmininu, Ademola. Then came the traditional markers of twinship: Taiwo (the first to taste the world) and Adeleye Adelanaola, followed by Adejuwon, Adedoyin, Adebola, and finally Kehinde Ogunwusi (the second-born twin).
The congregation murmured in awe. Eleven names for two babies, a testament to the weight of expectation placed upon their small shoulders.
Olori Mariam, radiant in a white lace with headgear, was also in a gay mood. After the blessing, the reception that followed was “strictly royalty.” Crystal glasses clinked, and guests were treated to a lavish spread that married Nigerian jollof rice, Abula, Ofada with Ayamase Sauce, Canadian maple-glazed salmon. The twins themselves slept through most of it, unaware that their names had just been added to the long, storied line of the House of Ogunwusi.
