Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has said opposition parties have weakened their chances of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
According to him, the current political landscape would have been more competitive if opposition figures had remained united under a single platform to confront President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Fayose argued that fragmentation among opposition parties has effectively handed the advantage to Tinubu.
He referenced several opposition figures who have declared interest in the presidency, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, and Governor Seyi Makinde of the Allied People Movement, among others such as Omoyele Sowore and Dumebi Kachikwu.
Fayose maintained that the opposition would have posed a stronger challenge if they had presented a united front, similar to previous elections where a more consolidated race created tighter competition.
He said the division among parties has made it easier for the ruling party, insisting that the opposition has “destroyed their journey” by failing to come together.
He added that, as things stand, the president is likely to face less resistance in the upcoming election due to the split within opposition ranks.
