Six schoolchildren, a driver, and two other adults abducted along the Akwando–Kachia Road in Kaduna State have regained their freedom after spending 36 days in captivity.
The victims were kidnapped on April 26, 2026, when suspected bandits attacked a vehicle conveying schoolchildren from Akwando village to Kachia in Kachia, the headquarters of Kachia Local Government Area. During the attack, nine passengers were taken away, while a young girl was reportedly killed.
The release of the abductees was confirmed by the spokesman of the Kuturmi Unity Development Association, Manasseh Samuel, who said they returned home on Sunday morning after trekking through the bush for about six hours.
He expressed gratitude to individuals and groups who supported and prayed for the safe return of the victims.
The development was also confirmed by a former media aide to the late Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Reuben Buhari, who noted in a Facebook post that the victims regained freedom on Sunday and arrived home the following morning after their difficult journey through the forest.
According to Buhari, the abducted children endured traumatic conditions during their captivity and missed nearly an entire academic term.
He also called for continued prayers for other residents still in captivity, including victims abducted from Awon and Ariko villages, noting that some have spent between 42 and 57 days with their abductors.
Governor Uba Sani has been involved in ongoing state efforts to address insecurity and respond to kidnapping incidents across the state.
