The Federal Government has started paying outstanding salary arrears owed to resident doctors following the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), according to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.
The association confirmed the development in a notice to its members, stating that the long-awaited arrears—covering between one and six months for affected doctors—are now being paid across different centres. Several doctors have reportedly begun receiving alerts.
In the statement signed by the association’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim, the leadership confirmed that the payment process for the 25/35 CONMESS review arrears had officially begun, while urging members to remain patient as disbursement continues.
He explained that while most payments are being processed smoothly, the August component of the arrears is facing minor administrative delays, which may push its payment forward by about one to two weeks.
The CONMESS review, which determines the salary structure for medical and dental professionals in Nigeria’s public sector, has long been a contentious issue between government authorities and doctors, often triggering disputes over delayed implementation and unpaid entitlements.
Resident doctors, who make up a major portion of the workforce in Nigeria’s tertiary hospitals, have repeatedly raised concerns over poor welfare conditions, unpaid earnings, and increasing migration of medical professionals abroad in search of better pay and working environments.
Healthcare stakeholders warn that continued delays in addressing these issues have contributed to a worsening doctor-to-patient ratio and growing pressure on the country’s fragile health system.
Dr. Ibrahim assured members that outstanding cases would be resolved through appropriate administrative channels and thanked doctors for their patience and commitment during the process.
