The Federal Government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to examine and streamline the operations of security and paramilitary agencies across Nigeria.
The committee was formally launched by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, as part of broader efforts to reorganise the country’s security architecture for better efficiency and coordination.
Akume, who was represented at the event by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, said the move became necessary due to the rising number of security-related and quasi-security outfits operating across the country, many of which lack proper accreditation.
He explained that the expansion of these agencies has resulted in duplication of duties, overlapping responsibilities, and occasional jurisdictional disputes, which have affected operational effectiveness.
According to him, the committee’s findings will provide the basis for key government decisions on restructuring and strengthening the security sector.
The panel has been tasked with compiling a detailed register of all security and paramilitary organisations in Nigeria, reviewing their legal backing and operational mandates, and identifying areas of overlap or conflict.
It will also evaluate the performance of newer security outfits, assess existing coordination frameworks, and propose reforms to enhance accountability while reducing redundancy.
In addition, the committee is expected to recommend policy, legal, and institutional changes, which may include mergers, harmonisation, reclassification, or even the dissolution of some agencies where necessary.
Its overall objective is to align Nigeria’s security structure with national priorities and global best practices.
Membership of the committee includes representatives from key institutions such as the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations within a stipulated timeframe.
