A fire broke out Wednesday at the Senate wing of Nigeria’s National Assembly complex in Abuja, briefly disrupting activities before it was brought under control.
The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) wrapped up the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the North-East nominee for a board position at the commission.
Preliminary reports indicate the fire started in the kitchen compartment of the hearing room, possibly triggered by a microwave that had been left switched on. Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were said to have led efforts to douse the flames, helping to avert what could have escalated into a more serious emergency.
No casualties were recorded, and normal activities at the complex resumed shortly after the fire was contained.
In a development that drew attention, committee officials reportedly directed journalists present at the scene to delete photographs and video footage captured during the incident.
