Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.
Tukur’s death was announced on Saturday, September 12, 2026, by the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
According to a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Humwashi Wonosikou, the elder statesman and accomplished businessman died after a brief illness.
Bamanga Tukur was the first civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State and later served as the National Chairman of the PDP. He was also recognised for his contributions to business and public service in Nigeria.
Governor Fintiri described Tukur’s death as a major loss to Adamawa State and Nigeria, praising his courage, wisdom, patriotism and commitment to public service.
Fintiri said Tukur was a prominent figure who made significant contributions to the development of the state and the country.
He added that he would personally miss the late elder statesman’s advice and wealth of experience on matters affecting Adamawa and Nigeria.
The governor expressed his condolences to Tukur’s family, friends, associates and the people of Adamawa State, urging them to draw strength from his legacy of leadership and service.
In honour of the late former governor, Fintiri declared three days of mourning across Adamawa State. Government flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the period.
The governor also prayed that Almighty Allah forgive Tukur’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give his family the strength to bear the loss.
