The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned President Bola Tinubu that his administration’s economic policies are pushing Nigerians close to the limits of endurance, pointing to the rising cost of petrol, food and education.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said petrol now sells for as much as N1,470 per litre, making transportation, food and basic education increasingly unaffordable for ordinary citizens.
The ADC accused the president of turning fuel pricing into a burden on everyday Nigerians, noting that the cost of petrol drives up the price of virtually everything else.
The party cited widespread reports of private schools raising fees by 30 to 40 per cent, even as incomes have stagnated. It said parents’ salaries have not risen in step with the cost of fuel, food, rent, transportation and school fees, adding that it did not blame school owners, who it said are equally burdened by rising taxes, electricity costs, rent and wages.
Describing the current pump price as a “Tinubu Tax,” the ADC said Nigerians have spent months tightening their belts under the APC administration and are now being pushed to breaking point, with families reportedly skipping meals, pulling children out of school, forgoing medical care and shutting down businesses.
The party also criticised public officials for maintaining lavish lifestyles at public expense while demanding continued sacrifice from citizens, arguing that economic reforms that keep impoverishing the people cannot be considered successful.
It framed the 2027 general election as a choice between continuing under Tinubu’s current policies and the relief plan proposed by its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, restating his pledge to lower petrol prices by reintroducing subsidies to boost local fuel production — a move it said would ease the cost of food, transport and production more broadly.
The ADC warned the ruling party against mistaking Nigerians’ patience for approval, saying continued hardship should not be excused as resilience, and called on Tinubu to act urgently, stating that he has “had enough time and inflicted enough pain.”
