The member representing Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, has died.
Tongo, who won his seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, had defected to the African Democratic Congress (APC) in March 2026.
His death was confirmed on Friday by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, in a post on his verified X account.
Pantami said he had visited the lawmaker at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja earlier that day, alongside Alhaji Bappa Ahmad Abdullahi and other colleagues, where he prayed for him and met members of his family.
He said he left the hospital deeply worried after observing the lawmaker’s condition, which he described as visibly critical even to a non-medical observer. A few hours later, he received news that Tongo had passed away.
Pantami noted that dying on a Friday holds spiritual significance in Islam, citing a tradition attributed to Prophet Muhammad on believers who pass away on that day being shielded from the trial of the grave. He prayed for Tongo’s soul to attain eternal rest and for his family to find strength in their loss.
As of press time, the House of Representatives leadership had not issued an official statement on his death.
Tongo was among the lawmakers elected into the 10th National Assembly in 2023.
