Zamfara State has rolled out 72,000 bags of fertiliser, 200,000 litres of herbicides, and other farm equipment to farmers across the state, part of a fresh push to lift food production.
Governor Dauda Lawal launched the items on Friday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau under the state’s 2026 wet-season fertiliser programme.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the state received over 120 trucks of fertiliser and farm inputs for the exercise. Farmers also got 100 crop residue crushers, 100 grass choppers, feed milling machines, improved pasture seeds, 20 motorcycles, and 20 mobile phones for extension workers.
Lawal called agriculture the backbone of Zamfara’s economy, pointing to the state’s fertile land and long farming history. He said the intervention would revive agriculture, strengthen food security, and reposition Zamfara as a major player in Nigeria’s farm economy.
“Farming is the main livelihood and a key to inclusive growth and sustainable development, helping to fight poverty, banditry, and crime,” he said.
The governor said his administration wants to move farmers beyond subsistence into a productive, tech-driven, market-oriented sector, using better inputs, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services, and climate-smart methods. He added that partnerships with the Federal Government and international agencies have widened access to support programmes.
Lawal cited FADAMA III, NG-CARES, SPIN, ZACADEP, SAPZ, and IFAD-backed schemes as initiatives that have already reached thousands of farmers with improved seeds, fertiliser, agrochemicals, and irrigation facilities.
The distribution spans all 147 wards across Zamfara’s 14 local government areas. Each ward gets 340 bags of fertiliser, while each LGA receives 8,000 litres of herbicides.
