Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, have moved their children to a new school over security concerns, British media reported Monday, just days into the new school year in England, where the couple recently relocated.
Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties and left Britain in 2020 amid a rift with the royal family. Harry later fought a lengthy legal battle to retain UK taxpayer-funded security while based in California, but ultimately lost.
The couple, now settled in the Cotswolds with their children, seven-year-old Archie and five-year-old Lilibet, had enrolled both at a private school whose identity has not been made public. Harry has reportedly continued pushing for the reinstatement of police protection for his family.
Hello! magazine reported that the distance to the school and heavy traffic along the route were behind the security concerns that prompted the switch.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told the magazine the decision followed discussions with the family’s security team about the “practicalities of their current arrangements.” Harry and Meghan’s team did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
The family currently relies on private security, but Harry has asked the UK government to provide police protection instead, according to local media reports.
Britain’s Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), which oversees protection for public figures and royals, met last week to discuss the matter — as Harry marks his 42nd birthday on Tuesday. The BBC reported that Ravec will carry out a detailed review of the threats facing the couple.
King Charles III has said Harry and Meghan are not to be regarded as “working members of the royal family” following their return to Britain from the US.
