Vice President Kashim Shettima is back in Nigeria after standing in for President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi, India.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.
According to Nkwocha, Shettima took part in the summit’s high-level sessions and held a series of bilateral meetings geared toward advancing Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests.
Among his key engagements was a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two discussed renewed crude oil trade alongside cooperation in investment, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, and renewable energy.
Shettima also met with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, using the opportunity to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and a fairer global economic system.
During the summit, the Vice President relayed Tinubu’s push for reforms to global governance and financial institutions, while marketing Nigeria as a strategic entry point into Africa’s growing market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Nigeria also leveraged the summit to strengthen ties with BRICS members and partner nations across agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy, and human capital development.
