The self-styled Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi, was arrested last Tuesday by the Intelligence Response Team led by Chief Superintendent of Police, Moses Lohor.
Adeyemi was arrested between 11am and 12pm inside a building in the Ijebu-Ijesa area of Osun State.
His arrest followed a bench warrant issued against him by a Federal High Court in Abuja after he allegedly failed to appear for arraignment on eight counts.
A senior police officer in the Osun State Police Command, in an interview with Punch, gave details of the operation that led to the arrest, saying Adeyemi’s location was first uncovered in the Aregbe-Fakule area of Osogbo on July 9, after he had evaded tracking by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The officer said Lohor’s team took over the tracking after the DSS withdrew from the case, and that operatives eventually traced Adeyemi to Ilesa before arresting him on Tuesday morning.
According to the source, the Lohor team had been in Osun State for surveillance ahead of the August 15 governorship election, mapping hotspots and gathering intelligence. The team operated independently of the Osun State Police Command, running its operations from the area commander’s office at Oke-Fia in Osogbo.
The officer said Adeyemi had already been on the team’s watch list, but they held off acting because the case was being handled by the DSS. The DSS had last tracked him to Ibadan but could not make an arrest because he frequently switched off his phone.
A senior police officer from Abuja notified the Lohor team about the DSS’s withdrawal from the case on a Wednesday. The team then began tracking Adeyemi’s location the following Thursday, July 9, and traced him to the Aregbe-Fakule area of Osogbo.
Late the following Monday night, Adeyemi’s location showed he was in Ilesa. The team intensified efforts, culminating in his arrest on Tuesday morning. The Osun State Commissioner of Police was only informed once the team moved in to make the arrest.
Adeyemi is currently being detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to be arraigned on July 27.
