The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced activities leading to the 2027 general elections, marking the start of key pre-election processes across political parties in Nigeria.
According to Naija News, the announcement ushers in a 38-day window for political parties to conduct primaries and select candidates for various elective positions, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC’s updated timetable for the elections.
From April 23, 2026, parties are expected to conclude all primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly elections within the stipulated 38 days. They are also required to resolve all internal disputes arising from the exercise within the same period.
INEC further directed political parties to submit their updated membership registers at least 21 days before holding their primaries. The final deadline for submission of these registers has been fixed for May 10, 2026.
Recall that the electoral body had earlier released a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
Under the updated schedule, the presidential and governorship elections are now slated for January 16, 2027, while elections into State Houses of Assembly and additional governorship seats will hold on February 6, 2027.
INEC explained that the adjustment became necessary following the signing of the Electoral Act 2026 into law by President Bola Tinubu, after its passage by the National Assembly.
In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission noted that the new legal framework required a comprehensive review of previously announced election dates and activities.
