Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has returned home to Freetown after more than two years in Nigeria, following the collapse of the treason case brought against him over the November 2023 Freetown attacks.
Koroma left Nigeria on Sunday, seen off by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, bringing an end to a stay that began in January 2024 when he travelled to Nigeria for medical treatment.
His extended stay coincided with legal proceedings back home, where he faced charges of treason and other offences linked to the Freetown unrest. Nigeria effectively became his base while efforts continued to resolve the case and pave the way for his return.
Sierra Leonean authorities discontinued the criminal proceedings against him in July 2026, with the Attorney-General’s office confirming the case was no longer active in court. That development cleared the path for Koroma’s homecoming.
Jonathan was among the key figures who backed efforts to facilitate Koroma’s return, and his presence at the send-off underscored the role he played throughout the process.
Koroma, who led Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, had secured judicial permission in 2024 to leave the country for medical care. His return was formally announced by Sierra Leonean Vice President Mohamed Jalloh, who framed it as part of a broader push for peace and national unity.
Speaking to journalists shortly after landing in Sierra Leone, Koroma confirmed he was back home and said he was open to consultations and advice as he settles back into life in the country.
