A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on Nigerians to prioritise unity over ethnic and religious divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Sunday, Kwankwaso urged voters and political actors to move beyond tribal and religious sentiments in choosing leaders.
He argued that northern Muslims cannot achieve political success without the support of Christians and people from the South-West, South-East, and South-South regions.
“We must look beyond tribe and religion. We are Northerners and Muslims, and everybody knows that, but we can’t play politics without Christians, Southeast, South-South or South-west,” he said.
Kwankwaso also commented on the political influence of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as a widely accepted figure across different parts of the country.
According to him, Obi remains popular in the South and also enjoys notable support in parts of the North, stressing that his influence cannot be ignored in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“If you look at it, Peter Obi is a very popular politician in the entire South and many parts of Northern Nigeria, and you cannot take that from him,” he said, comparing such broad-based appeal to the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
Kwankwaso further noted that the Kwankwasiyya movement is largely driven by young Nigerians who are focused on seeking better opportunities and a more hopeful future, rather than personal or family-based interests.
