The Lagos State Government has joined Nigerians in mourning veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, describing his death as a significant loss to the country’s creative and cultural sector.
News of the actor’s death broke on Sunday when actress Regina Chukwu announced it on Instagram. His daughter, Kira Hassan, later confirmed the loss during a TikTok live session.
In a condolence statement issued through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Ogogo as a pioneer of Yoruba theatre and cinema whose decades-long career helped project Yoruba culture to audiences both locally and internationally.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said Ogogo’s influence stretched well beyond the screen, positioning him as a cultural custodian who used storytelling to preserve Yoruba heritage.
“Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was a custodian of culture, a gifted storyteller and a proud ambassador of Yoruba heritage,” Benson-Awoyinka said, adding that his work entertained generations of Nigerians while keeping traditional values alive on stage and screen.
The commissioner noted that Ogogo’s decades of commitment to theatre and the entertainment industry had left an enduring imprint on Lagos State’s creative landscape, one she said would continue to guide upcoming actors and filmmakers.
She extended the ministry’s sympathies to Ogogo’s family, colleagues, and the wider Nollywood community, describing his death as a loss that would be felt deeply by all who witnessed his talent and warmth firsthand.
“His departure is a great loss to the creative and cultural community. We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” she said.
The ministry called on members of the creative industry and Ogogo’s admirers to continue honouring his legacy by drawing inspiration from his dedication to promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
