Nollywood actress Bunmi Nelson has expressed regret over failing to take an early opportunity to work with fellow actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele, admitting that she did not realise how far her colleague would go in the entertainment industry.
Nelson made the disclosure during an interview on the Talk to B YouTube podcast, where she reflected on her past encounter with Akindele and the lessons she has learned from it.
The actress cautioned people against underestimating others, saying she never imagined that Akindele would rise to such a prominent position in Nollywood.
According to her, she would have held on to the opportunity if she had known how successful Akindele would become.
“I didn’t see Funke going far. That’s why in life, don’t underestimate anybody. Don’t look down on anyone except you’re admiring their shoelace. If I knew Funke would go far like this, I would have held her tight because I can’t even see her back now.”
Nelson explained that she first encountered Akindele through a mutual friend, after which the filmmaker introduced her to the renowned Odunfa Caucus theatre group and acting academy.
She recalled that, at the time, she was involved in providing houses that filmmakers used as locations for movie productions. Akindele reportedly encouraged her several times to join the acting industry, but Nelson admitted that she did not take the invitations seriously.
She said she was hesitant because of what she had heard about the demands of the Yoruba movie industry, including the expectation that newcomers would show respect to senior actors and take on minor roles.
Nelson said the experience taught her the importance of humility and recognising opportunities when they arise.
She added that she regretted missing what could have been a significant career opportunity and apologised to actors Kunle Afod and Sodiq Adebayo.
The actress also appealed for another chance to work with Funke Akindele, saying she would gladly embrace the opportunity if it arises.
