The Lagos State Police Command has detained Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Omotayo Olajide after a bullet from his firearm killed a young girl and wounded another during an operation in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle.
The incident happened on Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
According to the police, Olajide and other officers were deployed to the area after a distress call about a violent clash between two rival groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys, who were reportedly fighting over toll collection. The Command said both groups were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the officers arrived.
During the operation, Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet hit two girls. They were rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital, where one was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. She died there. The second girl is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
The Command said Olajide has been disarmed and detained, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation. It said the probe would establish what happened and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the Command was deeply saddened by the loss of “a young and innocent life” and shared in the family’s grief. He added that the Command would keep the public updated on the investigation.
Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assured them that justice would be done. He also vowed that no officer found culpable would be shielded from accountability.
The police urged anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station or the Command’s Public Relations Department.
