The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued five critically injured passengers following a road accident involving a 40-foot HOWO truck and two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, along the Ojodu axis of Lagos State.
The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, caused significant traffic congestion along the busy corridor as LASTMA officials and other emergency responders worked to rescue the victims and restore normal traffic movement.
According to a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident involved an articulated HOWO truck, an interstate commercial Mazda bus and a Toyota Hiace bus, both carrying passengers.
Preliminary reports indicated that the heavy-duty truck, which was travelling out of Lagos, rammed into the two commercial buses, leaving several occupants seriously injured.
LASTMA officials stationed around the Ojodu-Berger axis quickly arrived at the scene and rescued five critically injured passengers, comprising three females and two males, including one of the drivers.
The prompt intervention of the traffic management officers helped evacuate the victims from the wreckage and facilitated their transportation to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Security personnel from Isheri Police Station also provided security support during the rescue operation, while compassionate motorists, accompanied by LASTMA officials, conveyed the injured passengers to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate for immediate medical assessment and treatment.
As emergency operations continued, LASTMA personnel worked to remove the vehicles involved in the collision, including the articulated truck, from the roadway to prevent further accidents and ease the movement of other motorists.
The crash initially caused a major traffic backlog, with queues of vehicles extending as far back as Otedola Bridge.
However, LASTMA officials were deployed along the affected route to control traffic, manage the congestion and gradually restore the free flow of vehicles.
After the vehicles were removed from the carriageway, they were handed over to the police for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and to determine the appropriate legal action, where necessary.
LASTMA Boss Reacts to Accident
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy and complete recovery.
Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of responsible driving, strict compliance with traffic regulations and regular maintenance of vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks operating on major highways.
He warned that reckless driving, mechanical faults and loss of control of heavy-duty vehicles could result in serious accidents, injuries and loss of lives.
The LASTMA boss reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives, reducing road accidents and ensuring smooth traffic movement across Lagos State.
He also urged motorists, especially operators of articulated trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, exercise caution and remain alert while travelling on major roads.
Furthermore, the agency appealed to all motorists to obey traffic rules and follow instructions issued by LASTMA officials to improve road safety and prevent avoidable accidents.
LASTMA maintained that the cooperation of motorists and strict adherence to safety regulations remain essential to reducing road crashes and ensuring safer roads across Lagos State.
