Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned traditional rulers in the state against getting involved in politics, stressing that the throne must remain neutral and continue to serve as a father to all.
Makinde spoke on Saturday in Eruwa during the first coronation anniversary of Samuel Adegbola, the Eleruwa of Eruwa, where he was also conferred with the chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.
The governor said any traditional ruler who strays into politics should expect to be criticised and disrespected, adding that royal institutions must treat all political actors without bias if they wish to preserve the dignity of their stools.
“The traditional institutions should accept us all as their children,” Makinde said. “But any traditional institution that interferes in politics, we will insult them. If they can cross into politics, we will abuse them.”
Turning to his presidential ambition, Makinde, who is the African Democratic Congress… [Note: article states APM] flagbearer for the 2027 election, said he was prepared to crisscross the country to canvass for support.
He noted that his bid for the presidency would not be limited to any particular region, stressing that it would require extensive engagement with Nigerians across the country to present his vision for the nation.
“My presidential bid will require me to engage extensively with the people and present my vision for a better Nigeria to citizens in different parts of the country,” he added.
