The family of late Nollywood comedian John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians and entertainment industry figures for urgent support, saying they have been plunged into severe hardship since his death.
The family made the appeal during a recent visit by content creator King Mitchy, revealing that Mr Ibu’s only daughter and two sons have all dropped out of school due to unpaid fees.
Their mother said the household has also been without electricity for two months and has had to fetch water from a well after being unable to pay utility and rent bills.
“They have even cut my light for two months now. No light since. We have been like that every night. We go to look for where to charge our phones, and it’s not easy,” she said.
Mr Ibu’s daughter urged the late actor’s colleagues in the entertainment industry to reach out to the family.
“I want to thank God for my mom — she tried everything she could to feed us, pay our school fees, and make us happy. So Nigerians, if you were in the industry with my dad, you’re seeing us now, come and meet us,” she pleaded.
The children’s mother also confirmed that the school had recently contacted her over the children’s outstanding fees.
Okafor, who underwent a leg amputation in November 2023 following a prolonged illness requiring multiple surgeries, died in Lagos on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62, after suffering cardiac arrest.
