Nigerian youths and other users have criticised fintech company OPay over the number of betting applications reportedly featured on its platform.
The criticism emerged through several posts on X, where users expressed concern that integrating betting services into a financial platform could encourage gambling and expose more young people to betting.
One prominent X user, Bearded Shina, called on the Nigerian government to restrict OPay from featuring betting and gambling applications on its platform.
He argued that making betting services easily accessible through a fintech application could expose teenagers to gambling at an early age and increase the risk of addiction.
According to him, Nigeria is already dealing with widespread gambling-related problems, with many people reportedly struggling with betting addiction and limited access to rehabilitation services.
He also questioned the decision to integrate betting services into a platform primarily used for everyday financial transactions, describing the move as potentially harmful to society and the economy.
Another X user, Sporting King, also expressed concern about OPay’s integration of a gaming centre into its ecosystem.
He argued that financial platforms should prioritise helping customers manage, save and invest their money rather than providing direct access to gambling services.
The reactions followed reports that OPay had introduced a game centre featuring several betting platforms, including Aviator.
However, checks by the publication showed that the feature had subsequently been removed from the OPay platform.
Efforts to obtain a comment from OPay’s public relations lead were unsuccessful as of the time of publication.
