The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a major transmission tower collapsed along the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor, disrupting bulk power supply to parts of the region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, TCN said the incident followed strong winds and heavy rainfall that swept through the area, damaging Tower T367 and forcing the company to declare force majeure on the affected line, known as 2KNJ-BRK1.
According to the company, the line first tripped at about 10:44 p.m. on Monday. A restoration attempt at 11:07 p.m. failed when the line tripped again shortly after.
Linesmen from TCN’s Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region were subsequently deployed to inspect the corridor, where they discovered that Tower T367 had given way.
TCN attributed the collapse to severe weather, noting that preliminary findings pointed to heavy winds and rainstorms as the cause.
The company said it has begun mobilising personnel, equipment and materials to the site to rebuild the damaged tower and restore normal transmission.
In the meantime, TCN said electricity supply to Sokoto has been sustained through an alternative route — the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau line, drawing from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor.
TCN apologised to consumers and other stakeholders for the disruption, assuring the public that repairs are underway to restore full transmission along the corridor as soon as possible.
