Adebayo Adelabu has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Power, submitting his letter to President Bola Tinubu through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on April 22, 2026. His exit from the cabinet takes effect on April 30, 2026.
Adelabu cited his long-standing gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State as the primary reason for stepping down, noting that his political goal dates back to 2016. He pointed out that even his earlier resignation as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 was driven by the same aspiration. He also stated that the resignation was made in compliance with the amended Electoral Act 2026, which he said necessitated a clean break from his ministerial role ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his resignation letter, Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the confidence placed in him to drive reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of widespread public frustration over persistent electricity outages across the country. Just weeks before stepping down, Adelabu had publicly apologized to Nigerians for the blackouts, describing them as temporary while acknowledging the severe hardship they have caused households and businesses — particularly during the current dry season when demand for cooling has pushed electricity consumption higher. He had promised visible improvements in supply within weeks.
