Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The summit will hold at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Freetown, bringing together heads of state and government, ministers, senior officials and representatives of regional institutions to deliberate on issues affecting West Africa.
A statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, said Shettima would join political and business leaders from across the region and beyond at the high-level meeting.
The statement said discussions at the summit would centre on strengthening regional cooperation and advancing collective responses to challenges confronting member states.
The Presidency said leaders at the summit are expected to consider major policy decisions and adopt resolutions aimed at reinforcing peace, democracy, economic growth and regional integration across the ECOWAS bloc.
The gathering forms part of ECOWAS’s statutory mid-year engagements, during which member states review progress on regional priorities, including security, democratic governance, trade, infrastructure, economic integration and sustainable development.
The summit comes as West African countries continue to grapple with terrorism, political transitions and economic pressures, even as the bloc pushes for deeper cooperation and integration.
The Presidency said Shettima would return to Abuja once the summit concludes.
