The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has dismissed media reports claiming that the Federal Government issued a “six-month ultimatum” to the World Bank.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, clarified that the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, did not issue any form of ultimatum during discussions with the World Bank delegation.
Mokwa explained that the AGF’s remarks were made in the spirit of strengthening collaboration and ensuring timely processing of financial support, rather than as a threat or directive.
He noted that the facilities accessed from the World Bank are loans, not grants, and emphasized the importance of prompt disbursement to ensure that projects are executed within approved timelines and budget cycles.
According to him, there was no objection or demand from the OAGF regarding the deployment of project accountants or other implementation processes tied to the six-month period before project closure.
“At no point did the AGF issue a threat or ultimatum to the World Bank. Rather, he stressed the need for stronger cooperation and timely consideration in processing project-related requests,” Mokwa stated.
He further reaffirmed the OAGF’s commitment to maintaining a strong working relationship with the World Bank and other development partners, particularly in the area of public financial management reforms.
The statement also highlighted ongoing efforts by the OAGF to modernize financial systems, including the digitalisation of financial management processes in line with global best practices.
