The Catholic Diocese of Wukari in Taraba State has raised alarm over worsening insecurity in the region, disclosing that about 98,000 people have been displaced and 217 churches destroyed in ongoing attacks.
The disclosure was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Diocese’s 3rd General Assembly held on Saturday in Wukari and signed by Bishop Mark Nzukwein.
According to the statement, the displaced residents are largely from communities in southern Taraba, particularly in Donga and Takum Local Government Areas, as well as the Yangtu Special Development Area. Donga and Takum have been among the worst affected areas.
The diocese noted that since September 2025, there has been a resurgence of violent attacks by armed groups, resulting in killings, injuries, destruction of property worth millions of naira, and the loss of livelihoods.
It further revealed that over 16 priests have been displaced, 217 churches completely destroyed, and the residences of at least eight priests razed. More than 100 persons were also reportedly killed in the attacks.
The statement also condemned the increasing cases of land grabbing, alleging that attackers have taken over ancestral lands belonging to displaced communities.
The diocese called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take urgent and proactive steps to address the deteriorating security situation. It also urged all levels of government to implement measures that would enable displaced persons to safely return to their homes.
