The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has sparked debate with remarks questioning the practice of traditional worship among Yoruba people.
In a video reportedly obtained by TVC News, the monarch expressed concern that adherence to indigenous deities could have negative spiritual consequences, suggesting that such practices amount to “distributing curses.”
The royal father also distanced himself from traditional religious institutions, stating that he does not place trust in native doctors, particularly in matters concerning his personal safety and well-being.
According to him, religion should be based on an individual’s personal relationship with God, rather than reliance on shrine custodians or traditional spiritual intermediaries. He further emphasized that, as a king, he does not see a role for himself in shrine-related practices.
Oba Akanbi went on to compare Nigeria with countries like China and India, arguing that despite Nigeria’s economic and developmental challenges, its people possess greater potential and inherent strength.
He maintained that Nigerians should not measure themselves against those nations, insisting that the country has abundant resources and capabilities that set it apart.
