The revered Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, is a man full of life. Beyond his stellar performance as the traditional ruler of one of Igbo land’s most historic kingdoms, he is a monarch who truly loves the good life. Deeply rooted in tradition, impeccably stylish and armed with a repertoire of knowledge spanning virtually every sphere of human endeavour, he is, at his core, a man who simply wants to live life to the fullest—leaving a lasting impact on his people and bequeathing an enduring legacy to generations yet unborn.
Well-loved and deeply revered, the royal father commands immense respect across the traditional institution particularly; for his unwavering commitment to peace and his constant advocacy for normalcy to return to the South-East, so that the region may once again enjoy the tranquility its people deserve.
The octogenarian monarch recently marked his 85th birthday, but instead of the usual loud celebrations, he chose a path devoid of unusual fanfare mindful of the prevailing mood of the nation. Despite having numerous sons and daughters of his kingdom who were eager to roll out the drums in his honour, he insisted on modesty; a quiet moment shared with his people.
Unbeknownst to him, The Delborough Hotel in Lagos had other plans sinister in the most beautiful sense. As Board Chairman of the popular luxury hotel brand, the establishment and its management orchestrated a day out designed to give him a treat he would never forget; a celebration of his ingenuity, his deep love for his people and his relentless advocacy for peace.
On Saturday, June 20, the stage was set. The carpets were rolled out and the hotel lobby along with other strategic locations was painted with his image, a vivid testament to the esteem in which he is held. Walking into the hall, Obi Achebe was almost moved to tears. The guest list alone spoke volumes; a convergence of Nigeria’s most influential personalities, all gathered to honour the royal icon.
The Dani Restaurant of the hotel played host to captains of industry, a former president, former and sitting governor, and other distinguished dignitaries who came to pay homage. It was an evening of dance, laughter, fine dining and free-flowing drinks an atmosphere electric yet convivial, offering many who had not seen one another in a while the perfect opportunity to unwind and reconnect.
Spotted at the event were Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; former Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Peter Obi; Founder of Nest Oil, Chief Ernest Azudialu; Senator Florence Ita-Giwa; Charles Oputa; Daddy Freeze; Nkiru Anumudu; Barr. Uju Ifejika; Professor Pat Utomi; and several other eminent personalities.
For a man who wanted nothing more than a quiet day, Obi Achebe received something far greater; an outpouring of love that reaffirmed his place not just as a king, but as a beloved father figure to a grateful nation.
