When grim reaper harvested his wife a year ago; after a prolonged battle with cancer, Senator Ben Bruce is still yet to come to the reality that his companion and beautiful wife has embarked on a sojourn of no return. But in his touching words to announce her passing a year ago shows that, they shared a great bond more than just husband and wife.
“I am broken. Just lost my beautiful wife to cancer. She was my best friend for 43 years and my wife for 41 years. Cancer is real, but it shouldn’t be a death sentence – awareness, and early detection and treatment are key to survival. I miss her so so much. I’m broken. Our children are devastated, I am too. But I have to be strong for them. Please put our family in your prayers. Like the sun, my wife was a blessing and touched the lives of everyone she met. Though she’s gone, she’d remain alive in our hearts forever. I miss you, my sweetheart, and my most beautiful girl, Evelyn Murray-Bruce. Forever yours.”
On the 20th March 2020, many were shocked to receive the message and tributes from the Bayelsa State-born businessman and politician.
His close allies would attest to the love Bruce had for his wife of 43 years. They were both point of reference to many young lovers. At a point, many thought they were both pierced with an arrow from Eros, the Greek god of love. They seem to have imbibed the saying of the late American journalist and author, Mignom McLaughin, that “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times always with the same person.” Without recourse, to exaggeration, their love was made in Heaven.
As tomorrow marks the first passing away anniversary of the quiet but beautiful Evelyn Murray-Bruce; sources averred that; her immediate family will be visiting her cenotaph to drop flowers and also pray for her even in death. Despite the irreplaceable lacuna, the death has caused the family; they will also celebrate her for a life well spent as she has silently touched the lives of those that came in contact with her. “The ‘Common Sense’ Senator is yet to get over the loss but he has been holding strong for the family. He mostly spends time with his mom and children and grandchildren now.”
