Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as well as violent attacks in Katsina State that reportedly left several civilians dead, including a pregnant woman.
In a statement issued on Tuesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the incidents reflect what he described as a worsening security crisis and a failure of leadership in Nigeria.
He expressed sadness over the killing of one of the teachers abducted during the Ogbomoso incident, saying the repeated wave of violence across the country shows a collapse of effective security response rather than isolated criminal activity.
The former Vice President criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of responding to security incidents only after lives have been lost instead of taking preventive action.
According to him, the government’s pattern of issuing condemnations and promises after attacks has become predictable and ineffective, while citizens continue to face rising threats from armed groups.
Atiku also alleged that insecurity has emboldened criminals who now operate with little fear of state response, pointing to repeated kidnappings, attacks on rural communities, and school abductions.
He further raised concern over reports suggesting attempts to restrict public access to images and details of violent incidents, warning that suppressing such information would worsen public distrust.
Describing the situation as both a security and moral failure, Atiku said Nigerians deserve a government that protects lives proactively rather than reacting after tragedies occur.
He called for the immediate rescue of all abducted victims in Oyo State, stronger protection for vulnerable communities, and a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s security architecture.
