The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike from Monday, June 1, 2026, following the abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.
The union said the industrial action is aimed at compelling the government to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the victims kidnapped in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The directive was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Wing Chairman of the union, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode.
The NUT expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils, saying the situation has triggered fear and anxiety among education workers across the state.
It noted that the insecurity has weakened confidence in the school system, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and increased tension within affected communities.
According to the union, the strike became necessary to draw urgent attention to the need for the immediate and unconditional release of the victims.
Teachers across the state were urged to fully comply with the directive, while also being advised to prioritize their safety during the period of the industrial action.
The union also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, and said it would continue engaging relevant authorities until the victims are safely rescued.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and security of educators and learners, the NUT stressed that the protection of school communities remains a top priority.
