A passenger has died after jumping from a moving commercial bus during a lone accident at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in the Surulere area of Lagos.
The Volkswagen bus, with registration number LND 130 XR, reportedly rammed into a median pole in the Fallout area at the weekend.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said preliminary findings suggest the driver was under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly before the crash, forcing motorists behind to swerve to avoid a collision.
He said a male passenger, attempting to escape the erratically moving vehicle, jumped out and sustained serious injuries on impact with the ground. He later died from those injuries.
LASTMA officials on routine surveillance along the Ojuelegba axis responded swiftly, securing the scene, managing traffic and clearing the deceased and the damaged vehicle from the road — a move the agency said prevented a possible secondary collision.
Police from the Area C Division, Ojuelegba, secured the scene, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the remains.
Bakare-Oki called the incident a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving, recklessness and operating mechanically unsound vehicles. He commiserated with the deceased’s family and urged motorists to carry out thorough mechanical checks — especially brakes, tyres and steering — before setting out on journeys.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to rapid incident response and road safety, and urged the public to report accidents, breakdowns and obstructions via the agency’s toll-free line, 3367.
