The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following concerns over suspected diphtheria cases.
The closure will take effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, as part of measures to prevent the possible spread of the disease among pupils, students and school personnel.
The directive was issued by the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang after suspected cases were reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government said schools that had already resumed academic activities must also close from Monday and remain shut until further notice.
The commissioner appealed to school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply with the directive and ensure that children remain at home during the period.
According to the government, the decision was taken as a precautionary step to safeguard the health and wellbeing of students, teachers and other school workers while efforts to contain the suspected outbreak continue.
The state government also thanked stakeholders for their cooperation, stressing that the temporary closure was in the best interest of residents and aimed at protecting public health.
