An accountant who allegedly fled to Canada after a ₦150 million burglary in Lagos has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force following his return to the country.
The suspect, who was accused of masterminding a burglary at a residence in Maryland, Lagos, was intercepted by operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, after months of surveillance and international tracking.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, said the case began on July 11, 2025, when a burglary was reported at a five-bedroom duplex in the area, with valuables worth about ₦150 million stolen.
He explained that investigations led to the arrest and prosecution of several suspects connected to the incident, while the principal suspect—who had worked as the late property owner’s accountant for 17 years—had already fled the country before he could be apprehended.
According to him, the International Criminal Police Organization was contacted on July 16, 2025, to assist in tracking the fugitive, leading to months of coordinated intelligence gathering and surveillance across borders.
Jimoh said the effort eventually paid off when the suspect was intercepted upon attempting to re-enter Nigeria from Canada.
He added that the suspect has already provided statements to investigators, while further inquiries are ongoing to uncover other individuals involved in the crime and to recover remaining stolen property.
Police also disclosed that efforts are underway to identify and prosecute anyone who aided, benefited from, or knowingly handled the stolen items.
The AIG warned that fleeing abroad would not prevent suspects from facing justice, stressing that international collaboration remains a key part of ongoing policing strategies.
He reaffirmed that the police would continue to pursue all persons linked to the case until full accountability is achieved.
