A serving police officer is in custody following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man who was already under restraint, in an incident that has sparked public anger across Nigeria.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usman Nuhu in connection with the death of Mene Ogidi, which took place in Effurun, Delta State on Sunday. The case drew widespread attention after a video of the incident circulated on social media this Tuesday, showing the suspect subdued before he was shot.
According to Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid, officers from the Effurun Area Command were responding to a tip-off about a suspect caught by transport union members at the Benin Motor Park on the Warri–Sapele Expressway, allegedly attempting to dispatch a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Placid stated that as the team moved to formally take Ogidi into custody, ASP Nuhu discharged his firearm — a move the police described as a clear breach of standing regulations that directly resulted in the suspect’s death.
The Inspector-General of Police has since ordered ASP Nuhu and his entire team to be transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary proceedings and potential criminal prosecution.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, separately confirmed the transfer in a Tuesday statement.
The Inspector-General conveyed condolences to Ogidi’s family and pledged that justice would be served. The Force also called on the public to remain calm while due process runs its course, reiterating that the Nigeria Police Force holds a zero-tolerance position on extrajudicial conduct, abuse of authority, and any behaviour that erodes public confidence in law enforcement.
