The Presidency has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over his recent promise to unite Nigeria if elected in the 2027 general election, describing his comments as empty rhetoric without a practical roadmap.
Reacting to Obi’s latest interview on the state of the nation, President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Engagement, Fredrick Nwabufo, argued that the former Anambra State governor lacks a clear understanding of governance and has failed to present concrete policy alternatives.
In a statement, Nwabufo described Obi’s remarks as “sentimental nothings,” insisting that the opposition candidate continues to rely on emotional appeals instead of offering practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
According to him, Obi’s promise to foster national unity was not backed by any detailed strategy, apart from repeated references to political associates from northern Nigeria.
He further claimed that the actions and comments of Obi and some of his supporters had contributed more to widening divisions than promoting national cohesion.
Nwabufo maintained that genuine national unity is achieved through inclusive governance, economic integration and equitable treatment of all citizens, rather than political slogans.
He said strengthening unity requires government policies that ensure fairness, justice and equal access to public resources, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or social status.
The presidential aide argued that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant progress in this regard by implementing programmes and projects across the country’s six geopolitical zones without discrimination.
He also highlighted what he described as the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, noting that young professionals from diverse backgrounds have been appointed to key positions in government at an unprecedented level.
According to Nwabufo, the Tinubu administration has demonstrated its commitment to national cohesion through balanced development initiatives and broader participation of Nigerians in governance.
The Presidency’s response follows Obi’s recent declaration that he would prioritise national unity if elected president in 2027, a promise that has continued to generate reactions across the political landscape.
