The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned dual nationals against using foreign passports to enter or leave America, insisting they must travel on valid US passports at all times.
In a Sunday advisory posted on its official X account, the embassy said the rule applies to every US citizen who holds dual nationality, including children.
The embassy also cautioned dual nationals against applying for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) with a foreign passport, warning that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) routinely rejects or cancels such applications.
“U.S. citizens are REQUIRED to enter and depart the United States on a U.S. passport. This requirement applies equally to U.S. citizens, including children, who are dual nationals,” the embassy said.
It added, “Dual national U.S. citizens may NOT use their foreign passport to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ESTA). The Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels ESTAs for dual national U.S. citizens.”
The embassy urged Americans living outside the US to check their passports’ validity before booking any travel, and to begin renewal early if their documents have expired or are close to expiring.
It further noted that immigration requirements differ from country to country, with many nations demanding at least six months’ passport validity before allowing entry.
