Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticised presidential candidates whose nomination documents contain no record of their primary school education, saying such gaps should not be ignored by voters.
Oseni raised the issue in a Facebook post on Sunday, reacting to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) publication of candidates’ personal particulars ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“People that can’t tell you their primary school want to be your president, and Nigerians will vote them,” he wrote.
The comment comes as INEC’s public display of nomination papers draws fresh scrutiny to the academic credentials and affidavits submitted by presidential aspirants.
INEC began publishing the documents, which include candidates’ educational histories, certificates, and other details required under the Electoral Act.
A review of the papers filed by President Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate, shows he listed a Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University as his qualification. But the fields for his primary and secondary school years reportedly read “0000.”
The entries have triggered reactions from the public and political commentators demanding clarification.
By contrast, nomination papers filed by Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress reportedly include educational records stretching back to primary school.
Oseni’s remarks appear to highlight that gap, arguing that anyone seeking Nigeria’s highest office should face scrutiny over information in official documents.
INEC says the publication marks the start of the statutory window for the public to examine nomination papers. Under the Electoral Act, anyone who believes a candidate’s affidavit contains false information can challenge it in court.
