Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to depart for New Delhi, India, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit this weekend.
This is contained in a statement issued on Friday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
The summit, holding at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries alongside other invited dignitaries to deliberate on global economic growth, multilateral cooperation, and shared development priorities.
According to the Presidency, Nigeria will use the platform to deepen bilateral relations, expand economic cooperation, and push its strategic interests in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, solid minerals, and technology.
India holds the BRICS chairship for 2026, with this year’s edition themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Discussions are expected to span political and security cooperation, economic and financial partnerships, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
While in New Delhi, Shettima will join plenary and high-level sessions alongside other BRICS leaders and hold bilateral meetings with heads of state and senior officials from participating countries, with a focus on deepening economic and diplomatic ties with Nigeria.
Nigeria has held BRICS partner country status since January 2025, giving it a platform to deepen South-South cooperation and engage major emerging economies on trade, investment, development finance, and reform of global governance institutions.
The Presidency said Nigeria’s participation aligns with President Tinubu’s push to strengthen the country’s international economic partnerships, attract investment, and open new markets for Nigerian products, with particular focus on agriculture, energy, solid minerals, and other non-oil sectors under the administration’s economic diversification agenda.
The summit marks 20 years since BRICS was established, as the bloc looks to deepen practical cooperation among its growing membership.
