A six-year-old Nigerian girl has lost her life following a fatal fall from a 28th-floor apartment in Toronto, Canada, leaving her community in mourning and raising urgent questions about child safety in high-rise buildings.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. at a residential complex located on Chalkfarm Drive in North York, near Jane Street. Toronto Police responded to reports of an emergency at the scene and found the child unresponsive on the ground outside the building.
At the time of the tragedy, the girl’s mother was in Nigeria. The child had been staying with a family friend who resides on the top floor of the building in her mother’s absence.
Neighbours who knew the girl described her as a cheerful and familiar presence around the building. Many recalled seeing her regularly during school runs and outdoor play sessions.
“She used to come here all the time and play — she was a lively kid. It’s very, very sad,” one resident told CP24.
Another neighbour expressed profound grief, saying the loss felt deeply personal. “It’s crazy that I will never see this child again. I see her every morning. It’s heartbreaking.”
The tragedy has also sparked questions among residents regarding how such a fall could have occurred, given that the building’s windows are reportedly fitted with safety mechanisms designed to prevent them from opening fully. Several neighbours noted that the windows are bolted and should not be easily opened, adding to the confusion surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
Greenwin, the property management company overseeing the building at 200 Chalkfarm Drive, expressed condolences, describing the event as “deeply saddening” and stating that its sympathies are with the child’s family. The company confirmed that emergency services responded swiftly and said it is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. It declined, however, to comment on the maintenance or inspection history of the building’s windows while the investigation remains active.
Toronto Police have stated that the case does not appear suspicious at this time, though investigations are continuing as authorities await the results of an autopsy.
