Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, on Monday appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
Sowore arrived at the court premises alongside supporters and members of his movement, some of whom carried placards as they accompanied him into the courtroom.
The development follows a ruling delivered on June 16 by Justice Mohammed Umar, who revoked the bail previously granted to Sowore after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.
The judge also granted an oral application filed by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), ordering the issuance of a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made defamatory and false statements against President Bola Tinubu. According to the charge, Sowore described the President as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to Sowore’s role as a prominent activist, politician and media entrepreneur.
As of the time this report was filed, proceedings had not commenced, with the court yet to begin sitting.
