Nigeria’s judiciary has officially embraced digital case management with the introduction of an electronic filing system at the Supreme Court, marking the end of manual filing of cases at the nation’s apex court.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, unveiled the Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS) on Wednesday at the Supreme Court in Abuja, announcing that the new electronic filing platform takes immediate effect.
According to the CJN, the initiative represents a major milestone in the ongoing effort to modernise the country’s justice system and align it with global best practices in judicial administration.
Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that courts around the world are increasingly leveraging technology to improve efficiency, transparency, record management and access to justice, stressing that Nigeria’s judiciary must not be left behind.
She explained that effective justice delivery in the modern era requires more than the proper application of legal principles.
“The administration of justice in the twenty-first century demands more than the faithful application of legal principles. It requires judicial institutions that are efficient, accessible, transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of court users,” she said.
The Chief Justice further stated that the implementation of the Nigerian Case Management System would be backed by the newly introduced Supreme Court (Mandatory Upload of Electronic Copies of Processes, Records of Appeal and Other Matters) Practice Directions, 2026, which mandates the electronic submission of court processes and appeal records.
She expressed optimism that the reforms would strengthen case management, safeguard judicial records and accelerate the resolution of legal disputes.
Earlier, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabiru Akanbi, announced that the apex court would now operate a fully digital registry as part of the ongoing reforms.
He encouraged lawyers, litigants and other court users to embrace the electronic platform and comply with the new procedures aimed at transforming the judiciary.
The launch of the e-filing platform is regarded as one of the most significant technological reforms in Nigeria’s judicial system in recent years, with expectations that it will reduce administrative delays, improve operational efficiency and expand access to justice.
