Ibukun Omole, a final year Civil Engineering student; Oluwadele Babatunde, a 300l student of English Language; and John Udeh, 200l student of English Language were the three students suspended indefinitely by the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, on alleged posed threat to the members of the university community and its social service function.
The three students, are therefore, advised to vacate the school premises pending review of their cases by the school disciplinary committee.
In a letter issued on the 11th of October by the school registrar, Dotun Awoyemi, was in line with the October 6 protest staged in the school premises in response to power outage, which reportedly lasted for six days.
However, the management in its letters alleged the suspended students indulged in “criminal conducts” and disrupted academic and extra-curricular activities during the protest.
“In pursuance of your supposed grievances…you forcefully and unlawfully seized one cabstar van and two commercial buses belonging to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers carrying out their lawful business activities on campus…,” the school alleged.
The suspended students denied the series of allegations by the school management. Mr Babatunde claimed to have been with his HOD on the day of the supposed protest. Mr Omole claimed he was not within the school premises on the day of the protest, claiming to have travelled down to Osogbo. Omole further divulged that; ‘This is the second time in a row I am been suspended unlawfully by the school management for something I know nothing about’. Omole and other suspended victims are planning to take legal action against the school management. They want their immediate reinstatement as students, because they have done nothing wrong to deserve the suspension.
