United States President Donald Trump has accused CNN of spreading false information regarding the recent ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran, claiming the report originated from a “fake news site from Nigeria.”
The controversy stems from CNN’s coverage quoting Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), which described the ceasefire as a significant victory over the United States. According to the report, Iran asserted that it had forced the U.S. to accept its 10-point proposal as part of the agreement.
Trump dismissed the report on Truth Social, calling it a “FRAUD” and alleging that CNN knowingly amplified a false statement from an unreliable Nigerian news outlet. He did not specify the outlet or provide evidence to support his claim.
“The false statement was linked to a fake news site (from Nigeria) and, of course, immediately picked up by CNN, and blared out as a ‘legitimate’ headline,” Trump wrote. He also urged CNN to retract the report while authorities investigate whether its publication violated legal or professional standards.
Trump later shared what he described as the official Iranian statement, attributed to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Araghchi confirmed that Iran would suspend defensive operations if U.S. and Israeli attacks ceased and announced a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping over a two-week period.
Iranian state-linked media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency, echoed the SNSC’s messaging, emphasizing that the enemy had suffered “an undeniable, historic and crushing defeat” and congratulating the Iranian people on the outcome.
Meanwhile, Brendan Carr, chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), warned broadcasters that failure to uphold professional standards could result in penalties, including the potential loss of licences. CNN, for its part, defended its reporting, maintaining that the statements were sourced from Iranian officials and corroborated by multiple Iranian state media outlets.
