For Ms. Amina Jane Mohammed, Secretary-General of the United Nations, consistency plays a pivotal role in her astronomic rise in her career as a public servant. She has been a leading voice in the fight against underdevelopment in Nigeria and Africa by extension; campaigning vigorously against illiteracy, hunger, and other vices affecting the flourishing of Africa using the sustainable development goal as bait to salvage the impending situation of underdevelopment in Africa.
When it comes to world politics, the Mother of six is not a greenhorn based on her antecedent acting in various capacities; performing excellently well. As Task Force on Gender and Education for the United Nations Millennium Project, Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) later as the Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Post-2015 development planning, she never failed to display her highly cerebral prowess and coordination dexterity representing Nigeria on the world stage with much pride.
With her wealth of experience in the United Nations, she was appointed in 2015 as the minister for Environment. She resigned her appointment in January 2017 when United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed her as Deputy Secretary-General. Under their leadership, the duo ensured robust response to the socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis; through a boost in climate action and unprecedented momentum for Financing for Development; aiding strong emphasis on coherence across humanitarian, political and development activities. They also kept the SDGs alive at the country level by also protecting the Paris Agreement, despite significant headwinds.
With this and many more achievements, she was recently reappointed for another term as Deputy Secretary-General of the World uniting body. Amina also disclosed her willingness not to leave anyone behind in her quest for the adoption of Sustainable development goals to enhance global leadership and oversight for the development and established a strengthened UN Resident Coordinator system as the foundation of a more effective development system.
